Running a pupil assessment

Each section of a pupil assessment is run on its own from the assessment home. The steps below cover a timed reading section.

Each section card has its own Start button. Tap the one you want to run.

Reading sections open with App As Stimulus?. Pick one of the three options:

  • App shown to pupil: the app displays the items full-screen for the pupil to read.
  • Paper shown to pupil, Answers recorded in the App: you read from the printed material and tap the answers here.
  • Enter a paper based assessment: copy in the answers from an assessment the pupil already did on paper.

The first two options run live with the pupil, so the on-screen timer runs while you score each item. The third option is different: the pupil has already finished on paper, so there is no timer to start. For sections that normally have a time limit (the ones with a countdown), the app will ask you at the end to type how long the pupil took, either from the time written on the paper or your best estimate.

The running screen looks different depending on which option you pick. See Paper vs in-app sections for a side-by-side overview of the three layouts.

The next screen shows the script for the section: what to say, what to demonstrate and how the timer behaves. Tap View Scoring Guidance for a refresher on what counts as correct, or Start Assessment when you’re ready.

For live + timed sections only. After Start Assessment, a Tap to start screen waits so the timer only begins when the pupil is ready. Tap the screen the moment they read the first item. Untimed sections skip this and go straight to the running screen.

The first item appears (with the timer counting down on timed sections). For each item, tap Correct, Incorrect or No Response. On timed sections, Pause stops the timer briefly. An End Test button finishes the section: on sections that allow ending early it closes even with items still unanswered; otherwise, with items pending, it offers to cancel the test instead.

When every item has been answered (or you tap End Test on a section that allows ending early), the app automatically opens the next screen.

6. Confirm the assessment completion (only on some sections)

Section titled “6. Confirm the assessment completion (only on some sections)”

A Complete Assessment dialog appears between the assessment and the results screen, but only if the section meets at least one of:

  • It allows the monitor to end the test early.
  • It’s a timed section.
  • It needs the duration typed manually (the Enter a paper based assessment option on a section that normally has a time limit).

When the dialog does appear, the cards inside it are also conditional:

  • Missing Answers: only if there are items the pupil never reached. You can go back and answer them, or leave them as no-answer.
  • Last Question Attempted: only when the section allowed ending early. Confirms which item the pupil reached.
  • Confirm Duration: only when the section is timed or needs a manual duration. On live timed sections the value comes from the timer (editable). On the paper based option the field starts empty and the Confirm Assessment Completed button stays disabled until you type the time.

If none of the three triggers apply (untimed, doesn’t allow ending early, and the duration is captured automatically), the dialog is skipped and the app goes straight to the results screen.

The summary screen always opens at the end (either right after confirming the dialog, or directly if the dialog was skipped). It shows the status, start time, duration, score, and every item with its result and time. Items the pupil didn’t reach are marked Not Attempted and don’t count against the score.
