Sample groups and assessment data

The Assessment Data area is where you analyse pupil assessment results. An assessment report groups results into sample groups, and you can disaggregate, compare and export them.

An assessment report has three cards:

  • a Details card, showing the report’s Project Form and Assessment Definitions,
  • a Sample Groups card, listing the groups in the report, and
  • a Group Comparisons card, listing comparisons between groups.

A sample group is a set of criteria that filter the assessments. As the on-screen text puts it, “A sample group is a set of criteria that let you filter the assessments. Click on a sample group name to disaggregate the data.”

Clicking a group’s name opens its detail page. The Details card shows:

  • Sample Size: the number of assessments in the group.
  • The group’s start and end dates.
  • Average Pupil Age (shown as “N/A” when there is no age data).
  • A View Assessments link, which opens the list of the group’s pupil assessments.

A Disaggregations card lists any disaggregations you have added, each with a clear button.

The main area shows the analysis charts:

  • Mean Scores: the average score per assessment section.
  • Results by Bracket: the share of pupils falling in each score band.

If nothing matches the group’s filters, the page reads “There are no assessments with selected criteria” instead.

Building and refining groups

  • New Sample Group creates a group within the report.
  • Add Criteria narrows a group’s assessments. It opens filter forms for School, Teacher and Pupil.
  • Add Disaggregation splits the results by a chosen dimension. The options include District (LGA), School Name, School, Teacher and Pupil.

Comparing groups

  • Compare Means compares the mean scores of the groups in a report side by side.
  • New Comparison creates a saved comparison in the Group Comparisons card, to which you can add sample groups.

Exporting to CSV

The Download CSV button on a sample group produces a CSV file with one row per pupil assessment. The columns run in this order:

  1. the pupil questions (the answers recorded about each pupil),
  2. then the section scores for each assessment section,
  3. then the teacher, school, district and project.
